Description
The Cottage is situated in a fairly secluded spot at the edge of a citrus orchard in a beautiful garden, a minute’s walk from the main road and only a few minutes’ walk down to the beach. It is a two storey old Greek house, which has been converted into two homes.
The Cottage is on the ground floor and has a large terrace shaded by grape vines and bougainvillaea, with a lush garden and a view of the orchard. There are tables and chairs in both the garden and terrace to sit, read, eat and relax.
The house itself is simple and charming and sleeps 4. The main bedroom is delightful, with a beautiful old fireplace, tiled floor and comfortable double bed. The second bedroom has two comfortable single beds. The kitchen is large and is equipped with a fridge/freezer, a gas hob and enough cutlery and crockery, saucepans etc to feed approximately 8 people. The bathroom is simple, with a flush, sit down toilet and shower with hot and cold water.
The house is looked after by Erol and Mualla Kaynar. Erol loves the garden and often visits in the morning to water it. Mualla makes sure the house is clean on your arrival and brings a change of sheets every week. They are there to help you if you have any problems with the house.
The house also caters for larger groups. The flat above Dervish Cottage is also available for rent. This has two large bedrooms, kitchen and shower room and sleeps five. It has a small terrace with a lovely view onto the orchard and accesses the roof terrace with wonderful views out to sea. There is also a double room with an ensuite bathroom behind the cottage, which can be rented separately.
Gümüslük is a simple fishing and farming village on the south west coast of Turkey about a 20 minute drive from Bodrum. It is a small and quiet place where you can find your tranquil spot, go off exploring, swim, windsurf or sail in the clear Aegean waters and enjoy the warm hospitality of the tavernas lining the waterfront, which are famous locally for their delicious food.It is surrounded by citrus orchards where life has remained very traditional and where the local people are both generous and friendly.
Gümüslük was built on and around the site of Myndos, a small Doric city from the 4th century BC, the remains of which can still be found all around the village. Because of these unexcavated sites, Gümüslük has been protected by law against over development and has therefore retained it’s charm and beauty.
There are plenty of small shops where you can buy all household essentials and food. There is also a market on Wednesdays where you can buy fresh local produce.
The best time to visit Gümüslük is in the spring and autumn. In the spring the surrounding hills are covered in wild flowers, the smell of the citrus orchards is intoxicating and the village is peaceful and quiet. In the autumn the sea is often as smooth and warm as silk. Both times are good for walking and exploring and for experiencing life in a simple Turkish village. The summer is the busiest time of year. Tourists come on day trips from Bodrum, visiting yachts harbour in the bay and the restaurants are buzzing. However this time too has its charm, when Gümüslük transforms itself into a small, chic, happening village on the Aegean.
Gümüslük is an ideal location for families with children. The beach is sandy and no cars are allowed down on the waterfront. The food is excellent and you can drink the tap water. Turkish people are very child friendly and well qualified, English speaking doctors are near at hand. Teenagers can enjoy the nightlife in Bodrum, which is easily accessible, or the relaxed Gümüslük beach scene in the summer evenings.
